Programs to Courses

Enrollment is currently being accepted for courses in the twenty-five Career Majors now being offered at Wes Watkins Technology Center (WWTC), but classes are filling up and space is limited.

Career Majors offered at WWTC include Landscaper’s Assistant, Residential Electrician Assistant, Building Maintenance Assistant, Maintenance/Repair Carpenter, Plumber, Residential Air Conditioning Technician, Administrative Assistant, Advanced Medical Office Assistant, Full-Charge Bookkeeper, Electrocardiograph Technician, Phlebotomist, Radiology Aide, Advanced Acute Care Nursing Assistant, Advanced Unlicensed Assistant, Long Term Care/Home Health Care Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant, Physical Therapy Aid, Restorative Aide, Student Athletic Training Aide, Veterinary Assistant, Multi Skilled Health Technician, Licensed Practical Nursing, Surgical Technologist, PC Support Technician and Webmaster.

A major change occurred when WWTC recently converted from programs to majors.  WWTC’s 25 Career Majors fall into 5 different Cluster Areas: Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Architecture and Construction, Business Management and Administration, Health Science and Information Technology.

WWTC initially offered 9 full-time programs that included Construction Trades Technology-which specialized in Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing and Heat and Air, Computerized Information Technology, Computer Repair and Networking, Health Careers Certification, Adult Health Careers Certification, Medical Office Technology, Surgical Technology, Service Careers Technology and Practical Nursing.  All of these programs will continue to be offered under the new titles called Career Majors.

The U.S. Department of Education acknowledges 16 groupings of occupations that categorize Career Clusters.  They include Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Architecture and Construction; Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communications; Business Management and Administration; Education and Training; Finance; Government and Public Administration; Health Science; Hospitality and Tourism; Human Services; Information Technology; Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security; Manufacturing; Marketing, Sales and Services; Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; Transportation, Distribution and Logistics.

The main focus of Career Clusters is to connect education systems and to provide a framework for schools to organize instruction and for students to gain entry level to professional level skills. The changes will enhance Career Tech’s ability to help all Oklahomans succeed in the workplace, education and life.  To guide the transition, the Oklahoma Career Clusters Framework aligns curricula and standards to the 16 Career Clusters, their associated pathways and knowledge and skills statements. The Oklahoma model incorporates career majors and courses that are aligned to industry credentials. To accomplish this step, Oklahoma Career and Technical Education (OCTE) has realigned their existing programs to a sequence of courses that are based upon industry-identified knowledge, skills and credentials.
